My work is based on intense observation. I get so much enjoyment from looking carefully, drawing or painting what I observe, that I go into something of an altered state. It’s like eating the very best chocolate, or sipping the finest wine.
I intend each painting to be a window into levels of feeling and perception. As I work, my awareness opens to the amazing details, the fine changes of color, the elusive lines and shadows. I sense mysterious relationships of objects to one another and to myself. I try to transmit the joy of awareness through my body, by my hand, into the painting.
My approach emphasizes the meanings and complexities of the visual world. Traditional materials, which offer centuries of technical development, are ideal for my purposes. I use mainly oil paint on linen, ink, pencil, and watercolor on paper. I also enjoy a newer medium, colored pencil, for its versatility and precision.
I am inspired by the classical painters of past centuries, while I am also very much at home with the new, contemporary realism of the twenty-first century. However, not all the work you see here is classical or realistic.
Some of my works on paper are experimental. I include them on this site when I think they may be of interest, and so that you can see the work and play that goes into my total production.
Please write and let me know what pieces spark your curiosity, I will be happy to give you background on anything displayed on this site. Thank you for visiting!
