After three weeks in New York City, new tools

I recently returned from three weeks at Grand Central Academy in New York, where I attended a color workshop taught by artist Graydon Parrish. If you think three weeks is a long time to study color, I assure you it was only an introduction to a much larger field. I have written about it on my blog (see links in several locations on this page), where you will also see photos of some workshop activities with palette and paint. It was fun to get out of the studio and visit the big metropolis after spending the Alaska winter preparing work for my July solo show. I met wonderful fellow artists and enjoyed the great art collections of the city.

Next week I will have an excellent opportunity to apply the lessons I learned in New York to my work in Alaska, as I once again go into Denali National Park for a week of camping, painting, and drawing. I hope for good weather. My goal will be to make many drawings and oil studies, lots of color notes, and, with luck, a few finished paintings. More on that when I return.

Show in July at Fireweed Gallery in Homer, other summer events

I will be the featured artist for a solo show at Fireweed Gallery in Homer, AK this coming July. The opening takes place on Friday, July 2, 2010. I will also do a demonstration painting in the gallery on Saturday, July 3.

I have been painting all winter in preparation for this show, and will choose from over 20 new pieces for the exhibition. Most have not been seen outside my studio, though quite a few are on the website and have appeared on my blog.

The gallery has let me know that they are willing to sell in advance to buyers who may not be able to make it to the opening. I will send an email to everyone on my list when the gallery has the full list of works and their prices, so that buyers can deal directly with the gallery for those sales. Works will be shipped to buyers when the show is over, at the end of July.

Immediately following the opening, I will travel to New York to take a course on color theory at the Grand Central Academy of Art. The course is 3 weeks long, so this is quite a commitment for me, and I am very excited. Look for more news about my trip in upcoming posts. It’s hard to leave Alaska in July (I hope the garden doesn’t go crazy!) but I believe it will be worth the sacrifice. I am eagerly planning my museum and gallery visits.

Later this year, I will return to Denali National Park with my friend Mary Bee Kaufman, to do more plein air work and to enjoy the peace and quiet of the park after Labor Day.

A Gallery Grand Opening in Anchorage

2 Friends Gallery will have their Grand Opening on Thursday, July 9, from 11 AM to 6 PM. Please mark your calendars!

2 Friends is located at 341 East Benson Blvd. in Anchorage, Alaska (next to Café del Mundo), phone: 907 277 0404.

Several of my still life oils will be on display. You will also find fabulous fabric, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, and more in this innovative new gallery.

Their gallery business will apply an interesting and original concept: 2 Friends will donate 10% of all proceeds to a different local non-profit each month. In July, the donation will go to our public radio and TV stations, KSKA/KAKM. When you purchase their wonderful art pieces, you contribute to your community at the same time.

I hope to see you there!
