imageArtist’s Statement

The work of an artist is to attempt to know the world. Each artist chooses a method, and each method works in its own way. My method is to observe closely. There is no end to the complexity and mystery in our world. It is abundantly full of things to see, not just on the surface, but especially at the level where the observed object and the observing mind act on one another to produce new versions of old forms.

I look to the great masters of the past for my method because their work still has the power to sustain us. We are pre-industrial creatures in a post-industrial world. The conditions of our lives sometimes make it difficult to recall that we are human beings. Artists and writers have depicted us in a nihilistic race toward a disembodied existence, and there is some truth in that vision. However, we have options. We can hold to what affirms us. As an artist, I claim the humanist tradition, in which discipline and passion, coming together as creative energy, can produce our truest and best accomplishments.

My intention is to offer you, the viewer, a mixture of pleasure, intellectual challenge, intrigue, and self-recognition. Some pieces here are lighthearted, some are quick sketches, and some are the result of long contemplation. If something here sparks your curiosity, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be happy to discuss, answer questions, and give you more background.
